How to Work with Plant Essences: A Practical Guide
Share
Plant essences are among the gentlest and most accessible ways to begin a relationship with the master plants of the Amazon. But they are also widely misunderstood.
In this guide I answer the questions I receive most often: what an essence actually is, how it differs from other plant preparations, and how to work with one in daily life.
What is a Plant Essence?
A plant essence is a vibrational preparation. It carries the energetic signature of a plant rather than its chemical compounds.
This is the most important thing to understand: an essence is not a concentrated extract, not a drug, and not a supplement. It works on the subtle level: intention, emotion, awareness, dream life. The amount of physical plant material in an essence is minimal.
This is also why essences are legal everywhere and safe to use: there is nothing psychoactive in the bottle.

The Shamanic Market essences: each bottle is prepared fresh upon order.
Essence, Essential Oil, Tincture: What's the Difference?
These three preparations are often confused:
- Essential oil: the aromatic compounds of a plant, extracted by distillation. Used for scent and topical application. Strong physical presence.
- Tincture: plant material macerated in alcohol to extract its chemical constituents. Used in herbal medicine. Physical action.
- Essence: the energetic imprint of a plant, captured in water and preserved with a small amount of alcohol. Subtle, vibrational action.
My essences belong to the third category, prepared in the traditional way I learned in the Amazon, with one difference: each bottle is made fresh upon order, never stored for months in a warehouse.
How to Take a Plant Essence
The practice is simple:
Dosage. A few drops (usually 3 to 7) under the tongue, or in a glass of water.
Frequency. Once or twice a day. Morning and evening are the natural moments: the essence accompanies your awakening and your dreams.
Duration. Work with one plant for at least 2 to 4 weeks. The relationship builds gradually. Switching plants every few days does not allow anything to take root.
The most important ingredient: intention. Before taking the drops, pause. Breathe. Remember why you are working with this plant. This moment of presence is what transforms a routine into a practice.
Creating a Daily Practice
The essence works best when it lives inside a small ritual. Here is a simple structure my clients use:
- Morning: take your drops, then sit for five minutes in silence. No phone. Just notice what is present.
- During the day: when you face a situation related to your intention (a difficult conversation, a creative block, a wave of emotion), recall the plant. This is enough.
- Evening: take your drops before sleep, and keep a notebook by the bed. Dreams often become more vivid and meaningful. Write them down.
- Weekly: re-read your notes. The patterns that emerge over weeks are the plant's teaching.

Choosing Your First Plant
There is no universal "best plant to start with". There is the right plant for your moment. Some guidance:
- If you are going through grief, heartbreak, or emotional closure: Bobinsana, the heart opener
- If you seek clarity, truth, and spiritual depth: Noya Rao, the tree of light
- If you want to deepen meditation: Blue Lotus
- If you need grounding and protection: Shihuahuaco or Chullachaqui Caspi
- If your dream life calls you: Camalonga or Guayusa
If you are unsure, two paths:
- Book a Plant Essence Consultation: one hour together on Zoom, and we choose the right plants for you
- Start with a themed bundle, where the plants are already combined to work together: see all Bundle Kits
Combining Essences
Essences combine well, and this is exactly the logic of my bundles: plants that reinforce each other.
A few classic combinations:
- Love & Light: Noya Rao + Bobinsana + Blue Lotus + Mucura, for heart and clarity together
- Dreams & Intuition: Noya Rao + Chiric Sanango + Blue Lotus + Wachuma Flower, for inner vision
- Grounding & Purify: Chuchuhuasi + Mucura + Tahuari + Una de Gato, for strength and cleansing
When combining, keep the same discipline: stable practice, clear intention, at least a few weeks.
When Will I Feel Something?
This is the question everyone asks, and honesty matters here.
Essences do not produce immediate, dramatic effects. The work is cumulative and subtle. Most people notice the first changes in their dreams (more vivid, more meaningful), then in their emotional responses (more space before reacting), then in a general sense of accompaniment, as if something is quietly supporting them.
If after a month of sincere practice you feel nothing at all, write to me. Sometimes the plant is not the right one, and we simply change it.
Going Deeper
When the work with essences starts to feel important, these are the next steps:
- Read about the tradition behind this work: What is a Master Plant Dieta?
- Meet the individual plants: Noya Rao and Bobinsana
- And when you are ready for the real immersion: Shamanic Dieta in the Amazon, June 2026
Frequently Asked Questions
Are plant essences legal?
Yes, everywhere. They contain no psychoactive substances.
Can I take essences together with medication?
Essences are vibrational preparations with minimal physical content, and they do not interfere chemically with medication. If you have any medical condition, always inform your doctor about everything you take.
Can children or pregnant women use essences?
As a precaution, I recommend consulting a healthcare professional first, as with anything during pregnancy.
How long does a 30ml bottle last?
With standard practice (5 drops, twice a day), about one month: exactly the length of a full cycle of work with one plant.
How should I store my essence?
Away from direct sunlight and strong electromagnetic fields (not on top of the fridge or router). A drawer or altar is perfect.
