What is Noya Rao? The Tree of Light of the Shipibo Tradition
Share
Deep in the Peruvian Amazon grows a tree so rare and so revered that many people, even experienced plant medicine practitioners, have never seen one with their own eyes. The Shipibo people call it Noya Rao, the "Flying Tree." In Spanish it is known as Palo Volador. And among all the master plants of the rainforest, it holds a place that no other plant can claim: it is considered the most sacred tree of the Shipibo-Conibo tradition.
I have spent years living and training with Shipibo and Mestizo maestros in the forest, and in this article I want to share with you what Noya Rao is, why it is so deeply venerated, and how you can begin a relationship with this extraordinary plant teacher.

The Meaning of "Noya Rao": The Flying Tree
In the Shipibo language, Noya means "flying" and Rao means "plant spirit" or "medicine." Noya Rao is the Flying Medicine: the tree whose spirit is said to move freely between the worlds.
The energy of this plant is neither masculine nor feminine. It is a pure form of light and love. The maestros say that if a Buddha could be a plant, it would be Noya Rao: the physical embodiment of an enlightened being, rooted in the earth and reaching toward the sky.
A Tree That Glows in the Dark
What makes Noya Rao physically unique is its natural bioluminescence. The fallen leaves and bark of the tree glow softly in the darkness of the forest night. Walking through the forest and seeing this gentle light on the ground is an experience that stays with you forever. It is easy to understand why the Shipibo regard this tree as a being of light.
This is why Noya Rao is also called the Tree of Light. For the Shipibo, the glow is not just a biological curiosity: it is the visible expression of the tree's luminous spirit.
Noya Rao in the Shipibo-Conibo Tradition
In traditional Shipibo curanderismo, Noya Rao is the pinnacle of the master plants. It is traditionally one of the last plants a healer will diet on their path, because its teachings are considered among the deepest and most demanding.
The qualities the tradition attributes to Noya Rao are:
- Pure light: clarity of mind and spirit
- Expanded consciousness: opening perception beyond the ordinary
- Inner peace: a deep stillness that remains after the work
- Devotion and love: an open, unguarded heart
- Truth: Noya Rao is said to illuminate the path of truth; it does not allow self-deception
Genuine Noya Rao trees are extremely rare. Only a handful are known in the entire Amazon basin, which makes every leaf and every piece of bark a true treasure, to be harvested with the greatest respect.

The Noya Rao Dieta
In the Amazonian tradition, you do not simply "take" a master plant. You enter into a relationship with it through a dieta: a sacred agreement between you and the plant spirit, involving a period of isolation, a strict diet, and dedicated spiritual practice.
A traditional Noya Rao dieta takes place in the forest, in semi-solitude, under the guidance of an experienced maestro. The dietero eats simple food without salt, sugar, or oil, abstains from contact with the outside world, and spends the days in meditation, dreaming, and listening.
If you feel called to this profound experience, I personally guide a small group Shamanic Dieta in the Amazon forest every year, in collaboration with the maestros who trained me.
Working with Noya Rao Essence at Home
Not everyone can travel to the Amazon, and the relationship with a master plant can also begin gently, at home, through a plant essence.
A plant essence is a vibrational preparation: it carries the energetic signature of the plant rather than its physical chemistry. Working with a Noya Rao essence is a subtle practice of connection: a few drops, taken with intention, as part of meditation or quiet reflection.
People who work with Noya Rao essence typically use it to support:
- Meditation and contemplative practice
- Times of transition that ask for clarity and truthfulness
- Heart-centered practices of devotion and gratitude
- Dreamwork and connection with the luminous side of life
Each essence I prepare is made fresh upon order, from sustainably harvested material, in the traditional way I learned from my teachers.

Frequently Asked Questions about Noya Rao
Is Noya Rao psychoactive?
No. A Noya Rao essence is a vibrational preparation, not a psychoactive substance. It contains no psychoactive compounds and is legal to own and use.
Does Noya Rao really glow in the dark?
Yes. The fallen leaves and wood host bioluminescence that produces a soft glow at night, one of the reasons the Shipibo call it the Tree of Light.
How rare is Noya Rao?
Extremely rare. Only a few confirmed trees are known in the Amazon basin, which is why genuine Noya Rao material must always come from ethical, traditional sources.
How do I use a plant essence?
A few drops under the tongue or in water, taken with intention, usually as part of a daily meditation or reflection practice. Detailed guidelines are included with every order. See also our Guidelines for Working with Sacred Plant Extracts.
Can I work with Noya Rao without a shaman?
A home essence practice is gentle and safe to do on your own. A full dieta, however, should always be done under the guidance of an experienced maestro.
