Preparing for Your First Plant Dieta: A Practical Guide
Share
People often ask me what they should pack for a dieta in the Amazon. It is the wrong first question.
The dieta does not begin when you arrive in the forest. It begins weeks before, in your kitchen, in your habits, in the honesty of your intention. The participants who receive the most from their dieta are always the ones who started preparing long before their flight.
This guide collects what I tell every person who joins my dietas in the forest near Pucallpa. If you have not yet read it, start with What is a Master Plant Dieta? and then come back here.

Preparation is the first act of respect toward the plant you are going to meet.
Why Preparation Matters
In the Amazonian view, the plant spirit begins working with you from the moment you sincerely decide to diet. The weeks of preparation are not a waiting room: they are already the dieta.
Preparation does three things:
- It quiets the body, so the plant does not have to spend the first days just clearing noise
- It clarifies the mind, so you arrive knowing why you came
- It shows the plant your seriousness: in this tradition, discipline is a form of prayer
Physical Preparation: The Body
Start at least two weeks before (a month is better):
Reduce progressively:
- Salt, sugar, and strong spices
- Red meat and pork (pork is traditionally avoided completely for dieta work)
- Fried and heavily processed food
- Alcohol and recreational substances (stop completely, as early as possible)
- Caffeine (reduce gradually to avoid headaches in the forest)
Favor:
- Simple meals: rice, vegetables, legumes, fresh fish, fruit
- Regular sleep, earlier nights
- Walking, gentle movement, time in nature
Sexual abstinence is traditionally observed for at least a week before the dieta (and during it). This is not moralism: in the Amazonian understanding, sexual energy and dieta energy interfere with each other.
Medication: never stop prescribed medication on your own. Tell your facilitator everything you take, with total honesty, during the screening conversation. Some medications require a longer preparation or make certain plants unsuitable.
Mental and Emotional Preparation: The Intention
The single most useful thing you can do before a dieta is to write your intention, and then rewrite it until it is honest.
First versions are usually noble and vague: "I want to grow spiritually." Keep digging. What actually hurts? What pattern keeps repeating in your life? What question would you ask if you knew you would receive an answer?
Other practices that help in the weeks before:
- Reduce stimulation: less social media, less news, fewer series. You are making space.
- Keep a journal: especially of your dreams, which often change before a dieta begins
- Tell the important people in your life what you are doing, so you are not carrying their worry into the forest
- Begin a relationship with the plants: this is where essences come in (see below)
Practical Preparation: What to Bring
Less than you think. For my retreats I send a complete list, but the essentials are:
- Light, comfortable clothing in natural fibers, long sleeves for evenings (mosquitoes)
- A headlamp with red light mode
- A journal and pens
- Biodegradable soap and insect repellent (natural if possible)
- Any personal medication, declared to your facilitator
What to leave at home: perfumes and scented products (they interfere with the dieta), books (the forest is the book), and as much of your schedule as possible.
Working with Fear
Almost everyone is afraid before their first dieta. This is healthy. The fears I hear most often:
"What if I cannot handle the isolation?"
The isolation is gradual and supported. You are alone, but never abandoned: the maestro and facilitators check on you every day.
"What if nothing happens?"
Something always happens. It is just rarely what you expected. The dieta works in silence, in dreams, in the weeks after. Comparing your process to the stories you read online is the fastest way to miss what is actually happening.
"What if too much happens?"
This is what the maestro is for. A well-held dieta has a container: the diet itself, the icaros, the daily presence of experienced people. You are not doing this alone.
A Gentle Way to Begin: Essences as Preparation
Many of my retreat participants begin working with a plant essence in the weeks before their dieta, often with the same plant they intend to diet. It is a way of introducing yourself to the plant before meeting her in the forest.
- Noya Rao essence: if you feel called to the path of light and truth
- Bobinsana essence: if your work is about the heart
- Not sure which plant is calling you? Book a consultation and we will find out together
How to work with an essence is explained in my practical guide.
After the Dieta: Integration
The biggest mistake people make is treating the last day of the dieta as the end. The post-dieta period (with its own food restrictions and conduct guidelines, which the maestro explains when closing your dieta) is when the teachings take root.
Plan for a soft landing: do not schedule important meetings, travel, or intense social events in the first week after returning. The plant is still working. Give it room.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should I start preparing?
Two weeks minimum for the physical preparation. A month is ideal. The intention work can start the day you decide to go.
Can I prepare for a dieta if I have never done any plant work?
Yes. Beginners often have the cleanest dietas precisely because they arrive without habits or expectations.
Do I need to be vegetarian or vegan?
No, but you need to follow the preparation diet seriously: no pork, minimal red meat, no alcohol, reduced salt and sugar.
What if I take antidepressants or other medication?
Tell your facilitator during the screening. Some medications are compatible with some plants and not with others. Never hide this information and never stop medication on your own.
When is your next dieta in the Amazon?
I guide one small group each year in the forest near Pucallpa, Peru. All current information is on the Shamanic Dieta page, or write to me directly.
