Long before sunrise, in the Kichwa communities of the Ecuadorian Amazon, families gather around the fire to share a warm, earthy brew and tell one another their dreams. The plant in the cup is Guayusa, Ilex guayusa, a relative of holly and one of the Amazon's most cherished plants of the dawn.

In the traditional way, Guayusa is taken in the earliest hours, between roughly three and six in the morning. As the community drinks together, elders guide a dream-sharing circle: each person recounts their dreams and receives guidance for the day ahead. Young people are taught to read the messages of the night, and hunters set their intention before entering the forest. Guayusa is the plant that holds this threshold between sleeping and waking.
