Una de Gato (Cat's Claw): The Protective Vine of the Amazon

Deep in the Amazon, a woody vine climbs the tallest plants toward the canopy, gripping the bark with small curved thorns shaped exactly like the claws of a cat. This is Una de Gato, Uncaria tomentosa, and among the Shipibo and Mestizo healers I trained with in Peru she is known as one of the great protectors of the plant world.

A Vine That Climbs Toward the Light

Una de Gato (Spanish for "cat's claw") begins life on the forest floor and slowly works her way upward, using those hooked thorns to hold onto host plants until she reaches the sunlight of the canopy. The maestros see a teaching in this: the capacity to rise steadily, to hold on through difficulty, and to keep climbing toward the light no matter how dense the forest becomes.

What Una de Gato Is Known For

In the Amazonian tradition, Una de Gato is the plant of:

  • Protection: forming a strong energetic boundary around body and spirit
  • Cleansing: helping to release heavy or stuck energies that no longer serve you
  • Renewed vitality: bringing fresh, clean energy to keep following your path
  • Boundaries: learning to say no, and to protect your space and your time
  • Resilience: the steady strength to keep climbing

Una de Gato in the Amazonian Tradition

Curanderos turn to Una de Gato when a person feels energetically depleted, invaded, or unable to hold their ground. She is a plant of the warrior spirit: not aggressive, but firmly protective. In dieta, she is said to strengthen the energetic field and clear away what has attached itself over the years, leaving you lighter and more fully your own.

Working with Una de Gato Essence at Home

A Una de Gato essence is a gentle way to invite this protective ally into your daily practice, taken in drops with intention. People typically work with her to support:

  • Energetic protection before and after demanding social situations or work
  • Clearing and cleansing rituals, alone or alongside Mucura
  • Learning to set and hold healthy boundaries
  • Periods of exhaustion, when you need to reclaim your own energy
  • Grounding and protection practice for healers and sensitive people

Like all my essences, every bottle of Una de Gato is prepared fresh upon order, from plants harvested sustainably with the communities I work with in Peru.

Frequently Asked Questions about Una de Gato

What does working with Una de Gato feel like?
Most people describe a gradual sense of being more protected, clearer, and more able to hold their own space, especially in situations that used to leave them drained. It is subtle, cumulative work rather than a sudden effect.

Can I combine Una de Gato with other essences?
Yes. She pairs naturally with Shihuahuaco and Tahuari (protection and strength) and with Mucura (cleansing). That is exactly why these plants stand together in the Protection & Strength Bundle and the Grounding & Purify Bundle.
